IMD Issues Red Alert for U-K District for Next Few Days

High velocity winds, rough sea expected to continue till May 27, fishermen told not to enter waters

Amid heavy rainfall lashing the coastal taluks of Uttara Kannada district, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the next few days. Karwar town woke up to the first rainfall of the season, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The rainfall, which came as a relief from the hot humid days, continued uninterrupted till late Tuesday evening.

The National Highway 66 and roads connecting Yellapur and Siddapur were waterlogged, and vehicles could be seen wading through the swamped roads. The low-lying areas submerged in water and many roads, where repair work is pending, turned into rivers. Silt and muddy water flowed onto the roads from the nearby hillocks.

According to IMD, the coastal district received 15.1 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. The Met department has predicted heavy rainfall until the coming weekend.
