Belief that lamps were burning without oil attracted scores of devotees to the temple
THE famous lamps at Chigalli's Deep Natheshwara Temple in Mundgod of Uttara Kannada district, that were burning nonstop for 46 years, have now gone off, much to the shock of the villagers who believe it to be a bad omen and are now offering special prayers to the deity for their protection. The lamps turned off on their own last week.
The belief that the lamps, lit up by a woman Sharadamma in 1979, were burning without any oil, attracted scores of devotees to the temple.
