Encroachments Removed to Decongest Palakkad Road

A drive by the State Highways Department to clear illegal encroachments on Palakkad Main Road turned tense on Monday, after employees of a popular sweets and snacks shop threatened officials attempting to dismantle unauthorized structures.

The removal operation, covering a nine-kilometer stretch between Kuniyamuthur Government High School and Salem-Cochin National Highways junction, is part of a larger effort to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety along the busy corridor. The stretch is one of the busiest roads in the city with numerous educational institutions while also being predominantly used by vehicles proceeding to and from Kerala. Officials began clearing flex hoardings, advertisement boards, and other encroachments early on Monday.
