The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected sacked Gujarat cadre IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt's interim plea seeking suspension of life sentence or bail in a 1990 custodial death case.

Given that today's judgment is interim, the SC will hear Bhatt's appeal expeditiously in the coming days. The judgment came as a major setback for Bhatt, a firm critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the court also denied him bail.

A two-judge bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, while rejecting Bhatt's appeal, directed to expedite the hearing on his appeal. "Prayer for grant of bail is dismissed and hearing on appeal is expedited," said the SC.
