India not Dharamshala, says SC, bins SL man's refugee status plea

INDIA is not a dharamshala (free shelter) that can accommodate refugees from all over the world, observed the SC on Monday, while dismissing the petition of a Sri Lankan national seeking a refugee status in the country as he claimed his life is in danger in Lanka.
The court made the observation after hearing his plea challenging a Madras HC order directing him to leave India immediately after completing a seven-year prison sentence under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA).
"Is India to host refugees from all over the world? We are already struggling with a population of 140 crore. This is not a dharamshala, where we can entertain foreign nationals. Please go to some other country," observed the bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and K Vinod Chandran.
