'Railways on ventilator', Oppn slams Vaishnaw
THE Indian Railways is set to become one of the world's top three freight carriers, with a projected 1.6 billion tonnes of cargo by the end of the current financial year, and fares for a train journey in India is 10 to 20 times lower than that of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and many Western countries, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday.
"The cost of train travel per kilometer in India is ₹1.38, but passengers are charged 73 paisa. The remaining cost is covered through 47% subsidy. Passengers received a subsidy of ₹57,000 crore in the 2022-23, which increased to ₹60,000 crore in 2023-24," Vaishnaw said while participating in a debate in the Rajya Sabha.
