The Army's plans to induct a long-range indigenous artillery weapons system are in advanced stages.

- MAYANK SINGH @ Pune & Ahmedabad

The advanced towed artillery gun systems (ATAGS) are ready for the first product model test, and the Mounted Gun System (MGS) technology demonstrator is awaiting the test by the Indian Army.

"The first gun system is ready for the mandatory first product model test, with the first Regiment of 18 ATGS will be getting inducted within a year thereafter," RP Pandey, Project Director of ATAGS, told this newspaper.

Pandey, at the DRDO's Pune-based facility, Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), said that the gun can be deployed in 90 seconds and can hit more than 45 km (tested up to 48 km) with a wider arc of fire, leading to more destruction to the enemy.

The procurement of this gun system marks a milestone in the modernisation of the artillery regiments, enhancing operational readiness.
