Sri Lanka detains 37 fishermen for border violation

THE Sri Lankan Navy detained 37 fishermen from Rameswaram on Saturday night for allegedly violating the International Maritime Boundary Line.
The fishing community in Rameswaram had only recently ended a nearly two-week-long strike condemning the arrest of 27 fishermen by the Sri Lanka Navy earlier this month. These men have not yet been released by the authorities of the neighbouring country.
The arrest of 37 more fishermen and the seizure of their five boats have been condemned by the fishermen's associations. They have called for a road blockade protest on November 3 and an indefinite hunger strike from November 6 until all the fishermen in Sri Lankan clutches get released.
A fisheries department official said the detained fishermen and their boats were taken to Sri Lanka for further proceedings. The fishermen hailed from Rameshwaram, Pamban and Thangachimadam areas.
