Myanmar strife: Indian consulate staff in Sittwe shifted to Yangon

THE Indian consulate staff in Sittwe (capital of Rakhine state in Myanmar) has recently shifted to Yangon with the increasing incidents of attacks that has left many dead.
"The consulate in Sittwe is functional on a skeletal basis at present. It was challenging for members to remain there due to the volatile situation. They have moved to Yangon," said a source. Bangladesh too has moved its consulate staff in Sittwe and sent them to Yangon.
The Indian government on February 6 issued an advisory following the deteriorating law and order situation and disruption of communication network, advising Indian citizens to leave.
On February 29, the morning artillery shelling in the main market of Sittwe left 12 people dead and injured 80 others. The market is about 4 km from the Indian consulate.
