MADHYA Pradesh higher education minister Inder Singh Parmar on Tuesday claimed that Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama did not discover the sea route to India, but landed here merely by following an Indian sea merchant, Chandan, "who rode a 3-4 times bigger ship than Gama's.

" He also claimed that "it was not Christopher Columbus, but Indian sailor Vasulun, who could have discovered America."

Addressing the convocation ceremony of state-run Barkatullah University in Bhopal, the minister said that to rule India for long, the British destroyed its education policy, which is best exemplified by the distorted history that has been taught to our students for generations.
