HIMALAYAN RELIEF AS ALL 41 RESCUED
The Morning Standard
|November 29, 2023
IN the end, it was manual effort to dig through the last 10-odd metres after a US-made auger machine broke down, which opened the path to rescue all the 41 workers trapped for over a fortnight in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi district on Tuesday.
Experts and scientists from 19 leading institutions of the country participated in the rescue effort, where the nature created one hurdle after another and tested their endurance before finally yielding. The first ambulance with the rescued labourers left for a local hospital around 8 pm.
A portion of the under-construction 4.5-km Silkyara-Dandalgaon tunnel in Uttarkashi had collapsed during a landslide in the early hours of November 12, the day of Diwali.
