Shotguns and shenanigans

I FEEL I should share with readers my experiences of the past weekend, which did not quite follow my expectations.

I don't want to sound snobbish, but I belong to a circle of intellectuals in the Midlands who meet regularly to discuss issues of great import in premises where such lubricants as beer, wine, and spirits are available to stimulate thought processes and conversation.

One of our number - Bruce Cameron - turned 80 the other day. I found myself invited to join him and a few friends for a quiet contemplation of this anniversary.

This, I presumed, would entail discussion of weighty matters at a well-known pub and eatery in the Midlands called Hebron Haven, which has been going for yonks. It seemed a good idea.

The televised rugby match between the Springboks and Italy would be a welcome break from intellectual rigour, as would the later match between England and New Zealand.
