I'VE been reading a remarkable and highly entertaining book on South Africa: 100 Moments That Mattered - Events that Built South Africa, by Peter Joyce.
In 311 pages, it takes us from the very early days of the San people, the Khoi, the Bantu; exploration by European mariners; settlement by the Dutch; settlement by the British; the ructions that followed, right up to the very recent past - all of it in an admirably succinct and highly readable style.
Joyce is a prolific writer with titles in travel, wildlife, biography, and history. I especially enjoyed his account of the release of Nelson Mandela, the abandoning of apartheid, and what followed. If you want to know what happened, here you have it in a nutshell - and a flavoursome nutshell it is too.
