Minister Manamela condemns Fort Hare University student unrest

THE unrest at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) has sparked widespread condemnation from both government and parliamentary authorities, following violent protests that have halted academic programmes and resulted in significant property damage due to arson.

Police confirmed that eight suspects, aged between 22 and 33, were arrested on charges of public violence and business burglary in relation to Tuesday's protests.

hey appeared at the Alice Magistrate’s Court and are expected to return on November 26.

However police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said no arrests have yet been made in connection with the arson or malicious damage to property that occurred on Wednesday.

Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela, described the situation as deeply concerning and called for calm.

“Thave had a discussion with student representatives and implored them to deescalate the situation at the university and ensure that all protest action is peaceful and provide leadership that protects both lives and university property,’ he said.
