The reality is babies are far more sensitive to sun exposure than we might think, and their skin care requires thoughtful planning.

Sun protection for babies

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, just one blistering sunburn in childhood can double the risk of developing melanoma later in life. Babies' skin is thinner and more sensitive than adults, making them especially vulnerable to UV damage.

Babies under six months old shouldn't use sunscreen. Surprised? Experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), recommend avoiding sunscreen for infants under six months due to their skin's higher absorption of chemicals and a greater risk of irritation.

Infants also have a higher surfacearea-to-body-weight ratio, meaning they're more exposed to any potential risks from sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone, which may disrupt hormones or cause allergic reactions.
