Shabana Mahmood faces revolt over her asylum changes

The Left of the party, which viscerally opposes any kind of border as racist, has already condemned her proposals as ‘pandering to the far-Right’. Her very personal response to critics was both powerful and courageous. Dismissing claims she was stoking division, she said she was the one who racists called a ‘f***ing P***. Her phrase shocked, but it indicates she will stick to her guns on this issue. Of course, we hope the Home Secretary succeeds. But mending the asylum scandal requires radical, root-and-branch reform — not cosmetic touches.”
