The London Standard
|April 17, 2025
With miles of coastline to enjoy and centuries of history to explore, Portsmouth really is the ideal location for a short break or a day trip with the family. There are attractions for all ages, a host of open space for outdoor fun and a packed programme of year-round events
-
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is an ideal starting point, with 500 years of naval heritage open to explore. No need to view attractions from afar here – visitors to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard can actually go on board world famous ships such as HMS Victory and HMS Warrior to stand on the very spot where history was made.
Or how about the world-renowned Mary Rose Museum? Henry VIII's beloved flagship was raised from the seabed in the largest marine salvage operation ever undertaken. The hull now stands in its own purpose-builtmuseum, alongsidethe world’s largest collection of Tudor memorabilia – also recovered from the wreck site. The ship is visible through floor-to-ceiling windows and there's even an air lock to go through, allowing visitors to be in the same space as the ship.

Review: Need a sound night's sleep? These earbuds can even cancel your neighbours
I am incredibly noise-sensitive. I have the disposition of an irritable bat, which is only exacerbated in a sleep setting. And I have neighbours whose noise is constant: coughing, kids screaming, shouting.

Shabana Mahmood faces revolt over her asylum changes
DAILY MAIL “For the millions in this country who want an end to unchecked illegal migration, Shabana Mahmood’s proposals for a Danish-style asylum system are a decent start. There are simple, commonsense tweaks to rules widely regarded as far too generous. A key sticking point will be Mahmood’s struggle to sell the proposals to her own backbenchers.
