Tree symbolises roots community has put down over 30 years
The Journal
|July 24, 2025
THE North East's Bosnian community have planted a cherry tree by Newcastle Civic Centre, both to mark the 30th anniversary of the genocide in the Balkan country and to honour the "incredible welcome" they received in the region.
-

The tree planting took place on Thursday, July 10, the eve of the Day of National Srebrenica Memorial Day.
The Srebrenica Genocide was one of the darkest chapters of the Balkan war where more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were murdered. Overall, around 100,000 Bosnians were killed in the war between 1992 and 1995.
Dr Smajo Beso, a lecturer at Newcastle University and founder of the Bosnian Genocide Educational Trust, settled in the North East after fleeing from the war-torn nation in 1994.
