Start planning for potential flooding
The Journal
|October 13, 2025
HOPE you're all making the most of these lovely autumn days we've been having in the North East. However, while we're enjoying the sunshine, we are now starting to look ahead to the winter with our Flood Action Week.
Like many areas across the country, the North East has had a long, hot summer. This led to environmental impacts, and we remain in prolonged dry weather status. There are other areas in the North that are still facing drought conditions. However, the Met Office has warned us to expect a wetter than average autumn.
This stark contrast reminds us why we cannot afford to be complacent about flooding risks.
The reality is sobering across England. Approximately 6.3 million homes and businesses face potential flooding from rivers, the sea, or surface water.
Climate change is bringing us more frequent and intense extreme weather events, making preparation not just advisable but essential for protecting our families, homes and livelihoods.
The Environment Agency's annual Flood Action Week this week will help communities prepare for flooding.
Think of it as your annual flood MOT - a crucial checkup that could make all the difference when severe weather strikes.
