Pizzeria bids to open on site of former restaurant

AN UNUSED Newcastle restaurant site that was shut down amid a bitter dispute with city officials could be brought back to life as a pizzeria.
The pan-Asian Geisha Bar and Restaurant in Jesmond closed suddenly in April 2023 and relocated to Benton, with its owners alleging at the time that they had been "victimised, persecuted and bullied" by Newcastle City Council. Its old Sandyford Road site has been vacant ever since, but could soon be transformed into a new Italian eatery.
Fuochi Pizza Experience is seeking to expand its popular Neopolitan-style pizzeria business from its current base on Westgate Road into a second location at the disused Geisha building.
Its owner, Piercarlo Deriu, said he hopes that the new restaurant could be ready to open before the end of this year - if it is granted planning permission by the council.
