No player bigger than their club, says Shearer

Ruud Gullit (centre) watching Newcastle in action against Sunderland in 1999 as club talisman Alan Shearer was left on the bench.

United legend Alan Shearer has recalled being dropped by Ruud Gullit when analysing Mohamed Salah’s current Liverpool situation.Back in 1999, Shearer was named on the bench for the Tyne-Wear derby with a victory for Sunderland in that game causing a huge stir before the Dutchman was removed from his position.

The duo worked for a brief period together on Tyneside and Shearer subsequently admitted the pair's relationship was ‘frosty’ for a long time as a result.

Having experienced being dropped as the team’s big player, Shearer is arguably the perfect person to comment on the Salah situation.

While the Newcastle icon was sympathetic of Salah’s current predicament, he would have and did handle things differently.
