More councillors taken to court over tax arrears

THREE more North East councillors were summonsed to court due to unpaid council tax bills since 2022.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) revealed last week that Newcastle City Council and Durham County Council had taken their own elected councillors to court due to council tax arrears. Both authorities issued four such summons between 2022/23 and 2024/25 municipal years, but refused to name the politicians in question.
We can now report that three councillors in North Tyneside were also summonsed to court for non-payment of council tax during that same period. One elected representative in the coastal borough was taken to court three times - for debts of £598 in May 2023, £1,452 in July 2023, and £600.39 in May 2024.
