FORMER ASSISTANT HANDED FIRST HEAD COACH'S ROLE AT SOUTH SHIELDS

IAN Watson has been backed to succeed as the former Gateshead assistant manager steps into the main role in the dugout with National League North club South Shields.
The former Blyth Spartans and Darlington defender was an integral figure in Gateshead’s recent successes after working as assistant to former Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson during his four-year reign at the International Stadium.
The duo rebuilt the Heed in the aftermath of their supporter-led takeover in 2019 and guided the club to the National League North title in 2022 before leading the Tynesiders to the FA Trophy final 12 months later.
Watson followed Williamson to League Two club MK Dons in October 2023 and they continued to work together when they accepted an offer to take charge of Carlisle United just under a year later.
