Howe on the why behind Woltemade

The Journal

November 27, 2025

EDDIE Howe offered a blunt response during his post-game Press conference on Tuesday night when asked why he didn’t play with a centre-forward against Marseille.

- By LEE RYDER

The head coach opted to rest Nick Woltemade in the south of France with Saturday night's trip to Everton in mind.

Instead, Howe used Anthony Gordon as a central striker but the move did not pay off as the England international failed to add to his Champions League goal tally.

However, a French journalist provoked a blunt answer from Howe when he queried why he did not play a recognised striker for such an important game.
