Dig out your mac and hat for country show’s ‘Vera’ contest
The Journal
|August 05, 2025
A Northumberland country show will celebrate its milestone 100th iteration with a Vera lookalike competition - among other activities and events.
-
Glanton was thrust into the spotlight in June last year with hundreds of people descending on the village as the final episodes of Vera were filmed.
This year, the famous Geordie sleuth forms a big part of the Glanton Show, which can trace its history back almost 170 years.
The ‘Glanton Games’, a likely precursor to the show, were first held in 1855, in the field in front of what was then the Red Lion Inn.
The programme included wrestling, hurdles, shot put, flat racing, sack races, and even a donkey race.
