Council in ‘patriotism’ row over controversial flag displays

An email circulated to elected members regarding North Tyneside Council’s stance on ‘Operation Raise ‘The Colours’ has sparked controversy among the local Conservative group. ‘he flag-based movement has spread around the country with the Union Flag or the St George's Cross being put up in public spaces.

In an internal email, seen by the Local Democracy Service, sent to North Tyneside’s elected members, councillors were informed the local authority would remove flags or artwork placed without permission on “council-owned assets” including buildings, lampposts and highways. Priority is given to flags or artwork that pose health and safety risks or property damage.

‘The email goes on to say: “Any flags or artwork featuring offensive language, slogans, or imagery will be removed immediately. This approach is the same as we would take with any other form of decoration or artwork being placed on a council asset.”
