'Bag splitting' claim sparks refuse worker strike ballot

REFUSE workers in Sunderland are in the process of voting on potential strike action, amid union claims they were asked to start checking through bags.

Staff at Pallion Recycling Centre are also balloting against the introduction of bodycams, which are set to be brought in by plant operator SUEZ.

The ‘bag splitting’ process would involve workers opening black bags to find recyclable materials, however GMB Union members have reportedly raised multiple safety concerns about this, including the lack of proper protection from the risk of needles and chemicals.

The ballot for potential industrial action is set to close on May 30, with strikes expected to take place in June.
