The Salt Dilemma: Striking a balance for better health

Salt a simple white crystal found in nearly every kitchen - has a powerful influence on our health.
-

From flavouring food to preserving it, salt has been essential to human civilisation. However, in modern times, it has also become a silent contributor to a host of health problems. As with many things in life, the key to salt is balance.
Understanding its benefits and potential harms helps us make informed choices that support overall well-being.
Salt, chemically known as sodium chloride, plays vital physiological roles. Sodium, one of its main components, is crucial for many bodily functions. It helps regulate fluid balance, transmit nerve impulses, and contract and relax muscles. Chloride, the other component, is necessary for digestion as it is a part of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
Here are some of the major health benefits of salt in moderation:
Sodium helps maintain the body's fluid equilibrium. Our bodies rely on a precise balance of sodium and water to function optimally. This is particularly important for athletes or people working in hot climates, who lose salt through sweat. A lack of sodium can lead to dehydration, muscle cramps, dizziness, and in extreme cases, hyponatremia a potentially fatal condition where sodium levels fall dangerously low.
Nerve impulses are generated by sodium and potassium gradients across cell membranes. Without adequate sodium, communication between nerves and muscles is disrupted. This can affect everything from heartbeat regulation to voluntary muscle movement.
Salt is a natural flavour enhancer. It improves the palatability of food and stimulates the appetite. In populations with limited access to diverse foods, salt can help increase overall food intake, contributing to nutritional adequacy.
Salt has been used for centuries to preserve food, especially in areas lacking refrigeration. It inhibits bacterial growth, helping to keep food safe and edible for longer periods.
