Rains: Staying healthy
The Island
|December 11, 2025
Staying healthy during the monsoon season in tropical countries requires planning and awareness because heavy rains, humidity and fluctuating temperatures create conditions in which many illnesses thrive.
-
People often welcome the relief from heat that monsoon clouds bring, but the season also increases the risk of infections, mosquito breeding and contamination of food and water. Taking simple precautions can greatly reduce the likelihood of falling ill.
One of the most important actions is to ensure access to safe drinking water. Rains often contaminate wells, tanks and other sources, making waterborne diseases more common. Drinking water should be boiled and cooled before use. If boiling is not possible, a reliable purifier or chlorine-based disinfectant can be used. Ice bought from outside should be avoided because it may be made from contaminated water. Eating raw salads or cut fruits sold on the street also increases the chances of consuming harmful microbes. Home-cooked meals are a safer option during the rains.
Food hygiene at home is equally essential. High humidity speeds up the spoiling of cooked dishes. Leftovers should not be kept at room temperature for long and must be refrigerated promptly. Stale food should be discarded even if it appears safe. Milk and meat must be handled carefully, as they spoil faster during damp weather.
