How poor sleep affects your brain
The Island
|October 20, 2025
Sleep is often described as the brain's reset button, but for many people, it is the first thing to be sacrificed when life becomes busy.
-
The effects of poor sleep go far beyond feeling tired the next morning. The brain is one of the most sensitive organs to sleep loss, and when deprived of adequate rest, it begins to show subtle but harmful changes that can affect mood, memory, and even long-term health.
When a person sleeps, the brain does not simply shut down. Instead, it becomes remarkably active, consolidating memories, clearing out waste products, and balancing chemical messengers that regulate thought and emotion. Lack of sleep disrupts these processes. The brain’s ability to form and retain memories is one of the first casualties of sleep deprivation. The hippocampus, which is vital for converting short-term memories into long-term ones, becomes less active, making it difficult to recall facts or learn new skills. Students and professionals alike find their concentration and comprehension slipping after a night of poor rest.
