Caring for your ageing dog
The Island
|May 29, 2025
As our loyal canine companions grow older, they rely on us more than ever to ensure their comfort, health, and happiness.
-
Just like humans, dogs experience physical and cognitive changes as they age. Grey hairs around the muzzle, slower movements, or an increase in napping may all be signs that your furry friend is entering their senior years. But growing old doesn’t mean growing unwell—many dogs enjoy long, healthy lives with the right care.
Here’s how to help your ageing dog thrive in their golden years.
One of the most important things you can do for an ageing dog is schedule regular check-ups—at least twice a year.
Older dogs are more prone to conditions such as arthritis, kidney disease, diabetes, dental disease, and cancer. Routine exams can help catch these problems early, when they’re often more manageable.
Discuss any subtle changes in behaviour or routine with your vet. A dog that drinks more water than usual or becomes reluctant to climb stairs could be showing early signs of illness.
