At least 10 persons are feared dead while 24 people, including a six-year-old girl, are believed to be injured as thousands of fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to celebrate the first victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2025 championship on June 4.
The death toll is expected to go up.
RCB beat the Punjab Kings by six runs in the final of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) in Ahmedabad on June 3, and thus won their first title in their 18th season in the league.
There were only 5,000 policemen to control a crowd of several lakhs of fans who have been celebrating RCB's victory from the moment it won the trophy on Tuesday night.
"We were not expecting such huge crowds," Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar said.
Sources said that while seven deceased persons were taken to Bowring Hospital in Shivajinagar, three others have been shifted to Vaidehi Hospital (previously Mallya Hospital).
It is learnt that fans were injured after a stampede-like situation erupted at Gate No.3 of the stadium where the RCB team was expected to turn up to celebrate the much-awaited victory.
