Andhra Pradesh to build 5km-wide Great Green Wall to protect its 1,053km- long coastline from cyclones and storms

Andhra Pradesh is planning to build a 5-km-wide ‘Great Green Wall (GGW) along its 1,054km-long coastline to mitigate the impact of natural phenomena like frequent cyclones, and environmental degradation.
The State’s Department of Environment, Forests, Science & Technology, under Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, has taken the initiative to complete the GGW by 2030.
According to official sources in Amaravati, the GGW is designed to protect three million-plus people inhabiting the coastal areas on India’s east coast by serving as a “living ecological shield,” while promoting biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
The GGW will comprise a multilayered green buffer zone having mangroves, shelterbelt plantations, inland vegetation, and even sand dunes that will reduce the impact of cyclones and storm surges, stabilise shorelines, and enhance livelihoods through ecotourism, sustainable fisheries, etc.
