Absurd catwalk dresses
The Island
|January 31, 2026
Many runway shows feature dresses and outfits that look so absurd and impractical that most people would never wear them in everyday life.
-
This often puzzles fashion fans and casual observers alike. Yet there are clear reasons rooted in the culture and economics of fashion that explain why these “unwearable” designs dominate the catwalk. What might seem like silly or nonsensical clothing at first glance actually reflects deeper goals, values and strategies within the fashion world.
At the most fundamental level, high fashion and runway design are forms of artistic expression. For many designers, a fashion show is less about presenting items that customers will buy and more about communicating ideas, emotions or themes through clothing. Runway pieces are often meant to provoke thought or challenge assumptions about what clothing can be rather than simply cover the body or provide comfort. This artistic focus leads to exaggerated silhouettes, unconventional materials and avant-garde shapes that look striking on stage but would be impractical in daily life. Designers use the runway the way a painter uses a canvas, telling stories about identity, society, environment or fantasy that go far beyond function.
