Huge turnout as New York enters generational battle

The first major Election Day since President Donald Trump returned to the White House started off well for Democrats yesterday. And while a debate about the future of the Democratic Party may have only just begun, there are signs that the economy - specifically, Mr Trump’s inability to deliver the economic turnaround he promised last fall - may hurt the Republican Party for the foreseeable future.

Voters came out in huge numbers yesterday according to the New York’s Board of Elections, with more than 2 million voters casting ballots — the first time that has happened in a New York mayoral race since 1969.

Zohran Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary earlier this year, faces former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, who is trying to land a massive upset.

A victory for Mr Mamdani would give the city its first Muslim mayor and its youngest leader in generations, while elevating the democratic socialist to political stardom and giving his brand of economic populism one of the most visible political perches in America.
