The Independent
|May 22, 2025
A key aide to a former Ukrainian president was shot dead yesterday morning outside an American school in Madrid, a police source said.
Police received a call about the shooting in the affluent neighbourhood of Pozuelo at 9.15am (8.15 UK time) local time.
A police source named the victim as Andriy Portnov, a senior aide to Ukraine’s former president Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted in 2014. He was taking his children to school when he was attacked, according to radio station Cadena SER.
The victim was hit five times before a final shot to the head, El Mundo claimed. Police are now looking for a tall, thin man who fled towards Casa de Campo. A Spanish police source told El Pais that a citizen reported finding a man “wounded, lying on the ground and unconscious”. First responders confirmed his death from “at least three gunshot wounds”.
