Remembering the fallen

A GUIDE TO THIS SUNDAY'S REMEMBRANCE SERVICES AND CEREMONIES ACROSS WEST YORKSHIRE

THIS Sunday countless people will stop to pay tribute in remembering military personnel who gave their lives for their country.

Cities, towns and villages will host memorial marches, parades and dedications to those who fell in conflicts involving Britain and the Commonwealth from the First World War onwards. The service and its associated events will commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian (for example, air raid wardens and merchant seamen) men and women who gave their lives so future generations could be free.

The events are an opportunity to remember people who died in more recent conflicts and acknowledge people fighting in present day conflicts across the world.

Originally instituted to remember those lost in the First World War, the Remembrance Sunday services are held every year on the second Sunday in November, the closest Sunday to Armistice Day on 11 November. Today, the nationwide services commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian men and women of two world wars and all the conflicts since 1945.

There will be many events in Yorkshire cities, towns and villages this year on Sunday, November 9. Here they are in alphabetical order. We will add details of further commemoration events nearer to Remembrance Sunday.
