Pupils vow to rebuild forest school after devastating fire
The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
|October 13, 2025
DEVASTATED pupils at a Batley school have vowed to rebuild their beloved 'forest school' outdoor space after it was destroyed in a fire started by vandals.
-
The outdoor space at Upper Batley High School in Batley had been created and nurtured by students over the past four years and was a source pride for the whole school. It was completely destroyed during the summer holidays in an attack blamed on vandals.
It gave those involved the chance to explore nature, develop practical skills, and work together in the outdoors.
The fire has left everyone at the Kirklees school "deeply saddened" but "determined" to turn this setback into a display of resilience and community spirit through a bigger and better rebuild, called Project Phoenix.
