Judge orders more details on plan to privatise care homes

HIGH COURT WANTS TOWN HALL TO EXPLAIN DECISION ON TRANSFERS

THE High Court has asked Kirklees Council to provide further evidence as a judicial review into its decision to privatise two dementia care homes is under way, it has been reported.

Earlier this year, the town hall agreed to transfer its last remaining dementia care homes at Castle Grange in Newsome and Claremont House in Heckmondwike to the private sector.

Throughout the process, families with loved ones residing in the homes have been vocal against the plans, fearing for the devastating impacts the move would have.

The group pursued High Court action after questioning many aspects of the council's process including transparency and the financial rationale which underpinned the decision.

A judicial review took place in Leeds on September 25, examining the legality of the decision. The local authority had originally hoped to complete the transfer by April this year.

At the hearing, Upper Tribunal Judge Ward reviewed extensive argument and evidence. The Judge has now ordered additional information and explanation from council officers, campaigners have reported.
