CANCUN, MEXICO'S PARTY CITY, HAS WORLD-CLASS NATURAL GEMS AWAY FROM ITS WILD NIGHTLIFE, AS ISABELLE BATES DISCOVERS
CANCUN in Mexico is the epitome of a tropical getaway a place where vibrant nightlife, sun-drenched beaches and endless margaritas attract millions of tourists each year.
The allure of the area lies in its strikingly turquoise Caribbean waters, luxurious resorts and a party scene that has made it a spring break mecca for American college students.
In recent years, another demographic has made the journey to this particular paradise the British. Despite the 10-hour flight, more and more Brits are choosing Cancun as their destination, not for wild parties, but for the promise of idyllic relaxation.
For those looking for a quieter escape away from the hustle of its busy hotel zone, just a short ferry ride away lies a hidden gem that feels worlds apart: Isla Mujeres.
This small, laidback island has long been a haven for those seeking tranquillity and a slice of paradise without the commercial buzz of its mainland counterpart.
Isla Mujeres, which translates to “Island of Women”, got its name from the Mayans, who once left numerous artefacts there in honour of the goddess of fertility.
Over the centuries, the island has evolved into an oasis of natural beauty, with its powdery white beaches and crystalline waters.
The ferry to the island costs around £11 each way with multiple boat trips available.
For those with an adventurous spirit, the snorkelling at El Meco Reef en route is an exciting challenge, but it's not for the fainthearted. Only strong swimmers should give it a try as the waters can be choppy and the distance to cover can stretch to around 500 meters.
Once we arrived on Isla Mujeres, the first stop was the relaxing Amazona Beach Club. The comfortable sun loungers are perfect for those who want to sink into holiday mode, while the attentive staff ensure that drinks are never out of reach.
