Plymouth's 'City of Culture' bid - it's now or never

ART, DANCE, DRAMA, SPORT AND COMMUNITY EVENTS ALL FEATURE

PLYMOUTH is to make a “now or never” move to be the UK City of Culture in 2029 and bid leaders are highlighting that it is already filled with cultural events.

They stress that culture is more than just art and includes dance, drama, sport, community events and much more.

They have mentioned the popular Pirates Weekend and community festivals, and Plymouth Argyle, for example, and said culture also embraces health and nature.

Led by Plymouth Culture and The Box, and backed by Plymouth City Council, the bid comes a decade after a failed stab at landing the prize.

But bid leaders stress that since then there has been a huge investment into city culture, and spotlighted the £48m pumped into creating The Box, and also investment into Devonport Market Hall, the National Marine Park, the Horizons sailing programme and Tinside Lido.
