Eco lodge launched as a ‘haven for young people’
The Herald
|October 06, 2025
SITTING on a balcony, overlooking nothing but fields and woodland, listening to birdsong, a stream and the distant sound of children playing, Plymouth city councillor Tom Briars-Delve reflects that it may feel as though he’s on holiday but, in fact, he’s still in the middle of the city.
Tom is enjoying the newly-established Bircham Eco Lodge, which has been created by the council as a new haven for young people.
Nestled in Derriford Community Park, Poole Farm is owned and run by Plymouth City Council, and last week marked the official opening of what has since become known as Bircham Eco Lodge.
And, as Cabinet Member for the Environment, Tom, pictured right, was asked to say a few words before unveiling a commemorative plaque.
“Children love exploring the nearby nature reserves but we needed somewhere for them to warm up on cold Winter days,” he said. “We dreamt of a venue for youth clubs, nature-based education, eco-therapy, and short breaks for children with special educational needs and disabilities.
