Die-hard players undeterred by change in weather

WEEK four saw a change in the weather for the GA Solicitors MLTC Winter Tennis League, and this resulted in a big disruption to the match schedule, with many cancellations. However, there were some better evenings and also some die-hard players who weren't going to let a bit of moisture in the air disrupt their tennis.

Mark Skerton and Vicky Roberts' game versus Alexandra Stephenson and Dominic Sivewright was the only mixed match to survive the weather

The mixed night on Wednesday was almost a complete washout with only one match being played, after many earlier cancellations. However, Vicky Roberts and Mark Skerton took on Alexandra Stephenson and Dominic Sivewright. The match started in the rain and Vicky and Mark started strong and raced to a 6-0 first set win. Dominic's serve was proving hard to return and Alexandra and Dominic came back into the second set but with Vicky creating some great angles, Vicky and Mark won the second set 6-2. In the third set, with Alexandra playing some great net shot winners, Dom and Alex won the third set after a tight tie break 6-5.

When James Spurgeon and sub Sophie Handley took on Sarah Blain and Miki Booth there was a very tight first set that went to a tie break, with Sophie and James pulling through 7-3. Sophie's net play in the second set was the difference with them taking it 6-2. Sarah and Miki found some form in the final set and stormed back to take it 6-3. However, James and Sophie had done enough to take the overall win 6-5 6-23-6, and stay in title contention.

Jose Rojas' big serve was very effective in the first two sets when he and Alan Mayes took on Dave Bate and Issac Jackson in Men's A, but it deserted him in the third which Dave and Isaac won convincingly. Veteran Alan was the steadying force in the pairing with some stout defending, and they won 6-36-42-6.
