Defensive frailties show but attack is on song for Argyle

HERE are the player ratings of Plymouth Live's Argyle reporter Chris Errington from the Pilgrims' 4-3 win against Bristol Rovers in the Vertu Trophy round of 16 at the Memorial Stadium.

Luca Ashby-Hammond 6 - Played his first game for Argyle since they lost 1-O away to Bristol Rovers in a Vertu Trophy group stage game on November 11. Could have done better, though, at dealing with the low cross into the six-yard area which led to Rovers’ first goal for Shag Forde.

Joe Edwards 5 - Jack Sparkes, Rovers’ former Exeter City left-back, caused a lot of problems for Edwards, and Xavier Amaechi who played in a wide right midfield role in front of the Argyle captain, with his driving runs forward throughout the game.

Mathias Ross 5 - Argyle struggled to get to grips defensively with Rovers’ attacking play as the hosts were set up by boss Steve Evans in a 4-3-3 formation and Ross, was no exception to that.

Alex Mitchell 5 - The Pilgrims never looked that comfortable when defending their goal, be it from open play or set pieces, and Mitchell did not display his usual dominance, although the whole of the back four was not at their best.
