CHRIS ROBINSON REVEALS MORE TALES OF THE DAVIS EMPIRE

A firm on the move

LAST week, we left Davis' Garage looking to resolve their situation in Buckwell Street. Their substantial site at the top of How Street had been earmarked for redevelopment, and it was clear they would have to move out.

The local authority, anxious to clear the bit of Buckwell Street that intruded into the proposed new road around to Bretonside, offered the company an alternative site.

The directors were not enthused and instead decided to look into expanding their business at Crownhill. Reginald Davis was tasked with investigating the cost associated with creating new doors to make the entrance wider; removing the old blacksmith’s shop and building up the walls to cope with the installation of a Tecalemit Ramp; creating a concrete floor at the back for building inspection pits; erecting ladies’ and gents’ toilet facilities; converting the workshop into an office; and installing fluorescent lighting and electric petrol pumps.
