Voters broadly accept £40bn tax rises in budget, survey shows

Voters broadly accept that Rachel Reeves's £40bn in tax rises in the autumn budget were necessary to improve public services, despite the majority expecting to be worse off as a result, according to research.
The chancellor announced a package of tax increases to invest in public services, in particular the NHS and schools - with the largest revenue-raiser a £25bn increase in employer national insurance contributions (NICs).
In a survey of 5,800 voters, carried out by academics at the University of Bristol, 48% said they thought the tax rises were "necessary", against 24% who deemed them "unnecessary".
Almost a fifth of respondents, 18%, felt neutral about the £40bn package, while 10% said they didn't know.
