US safety watchdog investigates Tesla self-driving car crashes

US regulators have opened an investigation into 2.88m Tesla vehicles that use its full self-driving mode (FSD) after a series of crashes.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the FSD assistance system, which requires drivers to stay alert and intervene if needed, had “induced vehicle behaviour that violated traffic safety laws”.
The preliminary evaluation could be followed by a recall if the agency believes the vehicles pose a risk.
Officials said they had received reports of Tesla vehicles running red lights or going against the direction of travel during a lane change while in FSD mode.
