The no-longer secret Adrian Mole project of David Nicholls aged 583/4
The Guardian
|November 18, 2025
David Nicholls and Caitlin Moran are among the writers creating a new version of The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾ for BBC One.
Nicholls, best known for his novels One Day and Starter for Ten, will lead the writing team. He described Sue Townsend’s 1982 novel as “a classic piece of comic writing”.
Known for his comically dramatic assessments of his teenage life in a Midlands cul-de-sac, the fictional Mole is an icon of comic literature, previously played on screen by Gian Sammarco and (as an adult) by Stephen Mangan. Producers said “a nationwide casting search” was underway to find the new Adrian.
