Shake-up of cash Isas to be dropped from Reeves' spring statement

The Guardian

March 13, 2025

A mooted shake-up of cash Isas will not be announced in the spring statement this month, but the government is still considering cutting the limit that savers can put in, it has emerged.

- Rupert Jones

A row has recently broken out over whether ministers should scale back tax breaks on the popular savings accounts to encourage a shift from cash into stock market investments.

There had been speculation that Rachel Reeves would announce a shake-up in the spring statement on 26 March, as she hopes to strike a "balance" between money put in cash and shares, but it is understood no changes will be announced.

Officials suggested the shake-up is a longer-term move, which may mean any changes will have to wait until at least the autumn budget.
