After 177 years the tropical jewel of the Royal Botanic Gardens, the enormous Palm House, is to have a green makeover costing £50m.

- Alexandra Topping

The Grade I-listed structure, which houses Kew's rainforest collection, will close for five years to allow engineers and botanists to transform it into the world's first net zero glasshouse.

The project will result in 1,300 specimens - including the world's oldest potted plant, an Encephalartos altensteinii (Eastern Cape giant cycad) from 1775 - being moved to temporary greenhouses.

The plants include 45 species on the verge of extinction, some of which will be dug up for relocation.
